Your Budget at Work - Valuing Our Employees
MMI Graduates 158 (Human Resources)
The Metropolitan Management Institute, a partnership between Metro Human Resources
and the University of Tennessee, graduated 158 Metro employees in FY2005. MMI
supplies Metro managers and supervisors with valuable tools and knowledge necessary
to become better leaders in the workplace and produce better results for the
citizens of Nashville and Davidson County.
MMI certification is open to all Metro managers and supervisors and is provided
at no cost to the employee. The program consists of 40 hours of instruction
taken over a 12 month period. Required classes include, Coaching and Counseling,
Diversity Awareness, Performance Evaluation, and Customer Service.
Since it’s inception in January of 2002, MMI has graduated over 500 Metro supervisors and managers.
Professional Development available for all Metro Employees (Human Resources)
In January of 2005, the Metro Human Resources Department, in a partnership
with the University of Tennessee, launched the Metropolitan Employee Professional
Development (MEPD) program. Unlike the MMI program, this program provides professional
development certification opportunities to non-management Metro employees. MEPD
consists of a minimum of 20 hours of instruction in such classes as Customer
Service, Stress Management, Career Enhancement, and Workplace Accountability
& Ethics. In just four months, the program already had more than 50 employees
pursuing certification.
The Human Resources Department currently trains over 10,000 people and provides over 400 classes each year.
Results of the 2005 Metro Benefit Survey (Human Resources)
Since 2002, Metro has added a number of new benefits and improved its benefit
services. So it’s only natural to ask: How do you like the changes? To
find out, the Metro Employee Benefit Board surveyed a sampling of Metro employees
and pensioners earlier this year. And now the results are in. Here are some
highlights:
- Overall, 8 out of 10 employees and 9 out of 10 pensioners say they are “very satisfied” or “satisfied” with their Metro benefits.
- Benefits that protect income such as life and disability insurance scored highest in satisfaction (89% or higher), followed by healthcare benefits (88% for medical coverage; 75% for dental; 66% for vision) and the Metro pension plan (59%).
- Roughly two out of three Metro employees and pensioners say that Metro Benefit Services provides “excellent” or “good” customer service. When asked in what areas customer service can improve, many employees and pensioners said they would like faster responses and more consistent answers when calling 862-6700.
