Multicultural Education

Multicultural education is at once a complex discipline and a far-ranging set of practical strategies and approaches to understanding human identity and behavior. Teaching and learning is an intrinsically multicultural enterprise because human beings are different; each one of us brings our varied life experiences and perspectives to the construction and acquisition of knowledge.

Hands holding up the world The Metro Human Relations Commission is charged with lessening and eliminating prejudice and discrimination through educational and awareness-enhancing public education programs designed to promote tolerance, respect, and the value of diversity. Our goal is to foster mutual understanding, tolerance, and respect among all economic, social, religious, ethnic, and other community groups by working with existing educational, religious, governmental, social, and community agencies.

We offer a wide range of education opportunities to address our region’s diverse needs, including community forums, diversity workshops and training events, and varied cross-cultural communication models including Diversity in Dialogue (DID) through a 10-year partnership with Scarritt Bennett Center and Everyday Democracy
