New Americans Fellowship

About the Summer Fellowship

The Mayor’s Office of New Americans seeks a summer New Americans Fellow to assist with Mayor Barry’s nationally recognized work to benefit Nashville’s immigrants and refugees.


The New Americans Fellow will work closely with the Mayor’s Office staff to, among other things:

  • Recruit for, administer and expand MyCity Academy, a leadership-training program that empowers New Americans to understand and participate in Nashville’s government
  • Conduct outreach to Nashville's New American communities via social media and otherwise
  • Develop and administer initiatives designed to inform and empower New Americans, e.g., a monthly newsletter, a community calendar and more
  • Interface with and provide assistance to the Mayor's New Americans Advisory Council


A successful candidate will be a self-motivated leader who has excellent writing skills and a demonstrated interest in issues related to New Americans. This position is open to undergraduate and graduate students only.


The New Americans Fellow will work in the Mayor’s Office at least 15-20 hours each week this summer. Hours are flexible but ideally will include 3:30-5:00pm the second Tuesday of each month and 9:00am-3:00pm the third Thursday of each month.


This is currently an unpaid volunteer position. Mayor’s Office staff will be happy to complete any paperwork necessary for the New Americans Fellow to receive course credit.
