A resolution supporting and encouraging economic equality for women.
WHEREAS, women contribute immeasurably to the economy of Nashville, the United States, and the world; and
WHEREAS, despite their great contribution, the median earnings of women working full time, year round are 79 percent of what men earned in 2016, according to the U.S. Census Bureau; and
WHEREAS, a lifetime of lower pay means that women have greater difficulty saving for retirement, making financial plans, and providing financial security for themselves and their families; and
WHEREAS, according to the United Nations, while at least fifty percent of the world’s women are in paid wage and salary employment, women earn on average twenty-four percent less than men for the same work; and
WHEREAS, fair pay equity policies can be implemented simply and without undue costs or hardship in both the public and private sectors; and
WHEREAS, fair pay strengthens the security of families today and eases future retirement costs while enhancing the American economy; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council recognizes and supports the economic equality for women and economic empowerment for women.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as supporting economic equality for women.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government and Davidson County requiring it.
