Mayor Announces Enrollment for Scholars Academy
3/15/2013
Current Eighth and Ninth Graders Encouraged to Apply
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Mayor Karl Dean announced today that enrollment is now open for the 2013 Mayor’s Scholars Academy, a free, four-week intensive academic summer program to help Metro Schools students prepare for success in high school and eventually college. Students who are currently in the eighth or ninth grade are encouraged to apply.
Transportation, meals and weekly field trips, including college visits, are provided at no cost. Academic classwork will help students be ready for high school English, algebra and geometry.
“Scholars Academy helps prepare students for a smooth transition to high school with intensive academic classwork and fun, engaging enrichment activities,” Mayor Karl Dean said. “It is an investment in education that I believe will plant the seeds for students to aspire to attend and succeed in college. Last year’s inaugural Scholars Academy was a huge success, and I look forward to meeting the scholars who enroll this summer.”
Scholars Academy will take place from June 3 to June 28 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cane Ridge, Glencliff and Maplewood High School and at Pearl Cohn Entertainment Magnet High School. Students who plan to attend, or live near, these high schools are particularly urged to enroll. Some 360 scholar slots are available.
The Mayor’s Scholars Academy began as a pilot program in the summer of 2012 for rising ninth graders. It is part of Mayor Dean’s efforts to increase the number of Metro students who attend and graduate from college.
