Hume Fogg High School Student Fatally Injured in Pedestrian-Truck Collision

December 19, 2013

The pedestrian struck by a tractor trailer and killed at the intersection of Church Street and Rosa L. Parks Boulevard this afternoon is identified as 17-year-old Elena Zamora, a junior at Hume Fogg High School.
Elena was walking east to west on Church Street in a crosswalk at 1 p.m. when she was struck by a tractor trailer that was turning right from Church Street onto Rosa L. Parks Boulevard.  The driver of the rig, Troy Devitt, 45, of Florence, Alabama, said he didn’t see Elena.  The preliminary investigation indicates that failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk is the primary contributing factor to the collision.
No charges are being placed against Devitt at present.  The investigative file, once complete, will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
Devitt was driving on behalf of Service One Transport, Inc. of Muscle Shoals, Alabama.  He was hauling electronic equipment and was en route to a Polk Avenue business when the collision occurred.
