December 27, 2013
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The pedestrian struck by a car on I-24 west near the Shelby Avenue exit at 7 p.m. Thursday died from his injuries at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The victim is identified as James Begley, 50, of 16th Avenue North.
The preliminary investigation shows that a Honda sedan being driven by Myka Drake, 31, of Hendersonville, was traveling west on I-24 when Drake swerved to the left to avoid Begley. Drake said she hit another vehicle when she swerved, causing the Honda to move back to the right. Begley was then struck. Drake denied hitting him, although evidence at the scene indicated that the Honda did impact Begley.
The vehicle hit by the Honda did not stop. It should have damage to the passenger side and may be white in color. It is unknown if the second vehicle also hit Begley.
There was no indication of alcohol or drug involvement at the scene. The investigation is continuing.
