Parents Charged with Murdering their 22-Month-Old Son

January 23, 2014

Parents Jamey & Christopher Chaffin are confined to the Metro Jail in lieu of $150,000 bond each pending their January 29th arraignment on a grand jury indictment charging them with murdering their 22-month-old son.
Paramedics responded to a 911 call from the Chaffin’s 1230 Bell Grimes Lane home just after 2:30 p.m. on June 20th of last year.  Jamey Chaffin, 29, was sitting on the front steps holding her son, Bryson, in her arms.  It was obvious that Bryson had been dead for some time.
Jamey Chaffin was transported to a hospital due to signs of emotional trauma.  In an initial interview with lead Detective Sarah Bruner at the hospital, Jamey Chaffin reported that Bryson began to cry loudly on the night of June 19th.  She said that her husband brought Bryson to their room and that she laid with her son before bringing him back to his bed.
On the afternoon of the following day, Jamey Chaffin’s 7-year-old daughter went to check on Bryson and found him unresponsive.  It was apparently the first time that someone had actually walked up to Bryson’s bed to check on him.  Jamey Chaffin directed that her 7 & 5 year-old daughters run to a neighbor’s home to call for help while she stayed behind with the victim and her other son, who was almost 3.  Christopher Chaffin was subsequently called at work and returned to the house.  He rode with his wife to the hospital.
An autopsy showed no physical indication of foul play.  Toxicology testing, however, showed that Bryson had a very high and toxic level of morphine in his body.  Jamey Chaffin had been prescribed morphine for back pain along with additional medications for other conditions.  Detective Bruner was unable to determine exactly how morphine came to be in Bryson’s system.  Jamey & Christopher Chaffin would not consent to follow up interviews.
In addition to murder, the Chaffins are also charged with multiple counts of child neglect.  Conditions in their home were filthy and deplorable.  Officers found bags of garbage on the floor, which was also littered with dirty diapers and animal feces.  There were cats roaming about, a pig in a cage in the master bedroom and a large exotic bird sitting on the outside top of its cage.  Papers on the floor had bird excrement on them.
The three other children were removed from the home on June 20th.
