February 19, 2014

The final tally is in and last Saturday’s 16th annual law enforcement-sponsored Polar Plunge for Tennessee Special Olympics raised a record $77,765 to help fund athletic programs for mentally challenged children and young adults.
First begun in 1999 by Metro Police, Smyrna Police and Nashville Airport Police, the unique fundraiser featuring a February dip into Percy Priest Lake has steadily grown.  This year, 336 persons, young and old, gathered sponsorships and braved the 38 degree day to show their support for Special Olympics.
Persons representing the following governmental agencies participated Saturday:
Metro Police, Metro Fire, Davidson County General Sessions Court, Metro Finance Department, Metro Health Department, Davidson County District Attorney’s Office, Brentwood Police, Franklin Police, Franklin Fire, TBI, Davidson County Sheriff’s Office,  20th Judicial District Drug Task Force and Metro Public Works.
Sponsors of this year’s Polar Plunge included Nashville Shores, Kroger, Gold Rush Restaurant, Tin West Catering and Chick-Fil-A.
