Parolee Lazarus Payton Wanted for Shooting Outside Church Street Club

West Precinct detectives have now identified parolee Lazarus Payton as the suspected gunman who opened fire outside club WKND in the 1700 block of Church Street just before 11 p.m. on July 18th. Arrest warrants charging Payton with two counts of attempted murder, aggravated assault and felony vandalism were issued during the night.
Payton, 31, is alleged to be the man who was ejected from the club about 15 minutes before the shooting. That person returned and opened fire at the front of the building. A man working in a security capacity for a valet service was critically wounded. One woman received a non-critical wound to her leg. Another man received a minor graze wound to his foot.
Payton was convicted of aggravated assault, felony reckless endangerment, felony evading and unlawful gun possession in February 2007. He received sentences totaling 12 years. He registered as an ex-con with the MNPD in February of this year.
