Mayor's Budget Discussions to Kickoff on Monday, March 13

3/9/2017

Mayor Megan Barry and Metro Finance Director Talia Lomax-O’dneal have released the schedule for upcoming meetings related to the 2017-18 budget.

"The budget process provides us with the opportunity to review and rethink what we have been doing well, and how we can do things better for the taxpayers of Davidson County,” said Mayor Megan Barry. “We are asking our departments and agencies to present their plans to improve services and outcomes through strategic and effective investments in Nashville.”

On the week of March 13-17, budget discussions will be held in the Mayor’s Media Room in the Historic Metro Courthouse. This will be an opportunity for department heads request additional funds, or suggest budget reallocations, in key areas aligned with the priorities of Metro Nashville. In a shift from previous budget discussions, Mayor Barry has asked departments to share any capital spending requests as well. As with the previous year, the Mayor has asked all departments and agencies to submit three year proposed budgets in order for Metro to be more strategic in where we invest taxpayer dollars. More information on the FY2018 budget process can be found on the Budget Preparation Information page.

On the week of March 27 – March 30, Mayor Barry will hold Public Investment Plan (PIP) hearings along with a panel consisting of Finance Director Lomax-O’dneal, Chief Operating Officer Rich Riebeling, Director of Innovation Nancy Shapiro, and Michael Burcham, CEO of Narus Health and founding President of the Nashville Entrepreneur Center. Public Investment Plans (PIPs) are an innovative new way of approaching budgeting that has challenged Metro departments and agencies to think creatively about how they can collaborate on citizen-centered pilot initiatives.

The Budget Improvement Discussions will be aired live on Metro Nashville Network and streamed on Nashville.gov, while the Public Investment Plans will be livestreamed on Nashville.gov. All will be archived and available on Metro Government's YouTube page and shown throughout the following weeks on Metro Nashville Network.
