Downtown Holiday Celebration Reminder
December 2, 2011
Street closings for 5K Run, Tree Lighting and Christmas Parade start at 4:30 P.M.
Anyone not planning to stay downtown for tonight’s holiday festivities may want to plan an early exit to avoid street closings on several key routes, including Broadway, Union, 2nd Avenue and the Woodland Street Bridge.
Preliminary set up for the Rudolph Red Nose Run and lining up parade participants begins at 4 p.m. on Woodland, Russell and North 1st Streets near LP Field. At 4:30, westbound lanes on the Woodland Street Bridge will be closed, along with North and South 1st Streets, Russell Street, Titans Way, Victory Avenue and 2nd Avenue between Church and Union,
About one hour later, eastbound lanes on the Woodland Street Bridge, all lanes of Union Street, both 1st and 2nd Avenues from Demonbreun to Union, Church Street from 1st to 3rd Avenues, and Broadway from 1st to 13th Avenues will all be closed. (Cross traffic on Broadway will be allowed until 6 p.m.)
Start of the 5K Run is at 6:00, followed by the Tree Lighting Ceremony, hosted by Mayor Karl Dean and Christmas Parade Grand Marshal Vince Gill, on the Public Square at 6:30.
A 7:00 fireworks display is set to kick off the Christmas Parade. The Shelby Street Pedestrian Bridge will need to be closed briefly starting at 6:45, then re-open after the fireworks.
All streets will re-open to traffic as soon as possible once the Parade ends.
