All school programs and field trips to Fort Negley address Tennessee state performance indicators for social studies and are FREE. Reservations are required. The paved path to and from the fort is one-half mile in length and includes some steep inclines.
Civil War Nashville Tour
This interactive guided tour of the fort highlights the lives of soldiers and civilians in Civil War Nashville. It also addresses causes of the war, leaders, slavery, African American military experience, and roles of women. Students will view and touch items such as hardtack, reproduction artillery rounds, and Civil War currency. May be adapted for all grade levels. Allow 45 minutes.
Classes may combine the tour with one of two activities to produce a 90-minute field trip. . .
Perspectives of Occupied Nashville Activity
Students see a 17 minute film about the Union Army’s capture of Nashville in early 1862. Then they explore perspectives of the occupation through first-hand accounts and role-playing. Recommended for ages 9 and up. Allow 45 minutes.
United States Colored Troops Recruitment Activity
Students see a 10 minute film about the USCT in Nashville and develop their own recruitment plan and poster for USCT soldiers. May be adapted for all grade levels. Allow 45 minutes.
Reservation Policies
Guided tours are available Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Please make field trip reservations at least one month in advance by filling out the online reservation form or contacting Naomi Manning at (615) 862-8470.
- Groups are limited to 60 students divided into two groups of 30.
- Please divide your group in advance.
- Arrive on time.
- Please call in advance if arriving late or cancelling.
- No backpacks, drinks, food, or gum allowed in the Visitors Center.
