Part of the construction of the Parthenon in the 1920s included untreated reinforced steel rods, especially in the sculptural work. Once a piece of sculpture was damaged or cracked, water seeped in and the steel beam rusted. This rust expanded causing pieces of the building to literally fall off of the pediment.
