Planner 3 - Front Counter (Customer Service) or Planner 3 - Plan Review: Current Planning

The Front Counter position will staff the Planning Department’s front counter for customer service daily, conduct research regularly, and occasionally lead the review of a variety of challenging cases and projects. The customer service role is a fast-paced, demanding environment with upwards of 50 customers and 150 phone calls/emails per day.

The Planner 3 (Plan Review) will be responsible for reviewing complex land development cases and may serve as a supervising planner. This position will also serve as a backup planner to the customer service/front counter on a weekly basis. This position may review Council bills, agendas and other documents for accuracy. Additionally, this position may attend and make presentations at Council meetings and Planning and Zoning Committee meetings.

Assigned to the Land Development & Design Division of the Metropolitan Planning Department, these positions will perform and coordinate professional level work relating to information regarding and review of zone changes, PUDs, text amendments, permits and subdivision plats. Must be enthusiastic about current planning and customer service. The Planner 3 (Front Counter) enters new cases into database for review and works with a Planner of the day, which rotates throughout the week.

Ability to communicate at a high level with other Metro departments, development professionals, citizens and engineers is desired. Must have the ability to accurately process, review, analyze and critique complex development issues with an emphasis on good urban design principles. Ability to write clearly and prepare concise and accurate letters, reports and presentations is also desired. Other qualifications include: knowledge of basic legal principles of land development and zoning; knowledge of form-based codes and New Urbanism; attention to detail; compliance with time-sensitive deadlines; clear and timely communication with a variety of stakeholders; strong prioritization and negotiation skills; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Education and Certification requirements: Bachelor's Degree in Planning, or related field, from an accredited college or university and eight (8) years of related experience, or Master's Degree in Planning or related field from an accredited college or university and six (6) years of related experience. Current planning experience for a local government is desired and, for Planner 3 (Front Counter), customer service experience in a similar position is also desirable.

Planner 1 - GIS Analyst

Metro GIS is a section of the Metropolitan Planning Department of Nashville and Davidson County that provides GIS services, applications, and data products to the Planning Department and GIS users throughout Metro Government. We are currently seeking an analyst to fill a highly valued position in our GIS team.

The position of GIS Analyst is responsible for:

  • Performing complex spatial analysis
  • Creating high quality cartographic products
  • Accurately maintaining a variety of GIS datasets
  • Providing training, support, and software installations

Duties include, but are not limited to, fulfilling custom map requests, editing SDE data, writing database queries, geocoding addresses, performing site selection analysis, developing metadata, etc.

The successful candidate will be a self-motivated independent thinker with a strong work ethic and a desire to develop their knowledge of geospatial solutions. The ability to manage deadlines and devise innovative responses to spatial problems is considered essential.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree that includes a background in GIS, Computer Science, Geography, or a related field.
  • 1-2 years of professional GIS experience
  • Sound understanding of GIS concepts and data formats such as geocoding, coordinate systems, and editing in an enterprise geodatabase environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of the ArcGIS 10x suite
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to communicate effectively as part of a team
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the Python programming language, web development experience, or the use of ArcGIS model builder to automate routine tasks
  • Experience with ArcGIS Desktop extensions (Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, etc.)
  • Experience with ArcGIS Online
