Employing a Metro Police Officer In an Off-Duty Capacity

There are three methods by which a business may employ an off duty Metro Nashville police officer. Below is a brief description of each option. For more detailed information about an option, click the appropriate option.

  1. Metropolitan Nashville Police Department police officers may be hired through the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department's Secondary Employment Unit. This is the only method by which a business or organization can hire a Metropolitan Nashville Police Department police officer with an option for a police vehicle.   2. Metropolitan Nashville Police Department police officers may be employed through a Contract Security Company licensed through the State of Tennessee – Department of Commerce and Insurance. Businesses and organizations can contract directly with a Contract Security Company. However, Metropolitan Nashville Police Department police officers are not permitted to drive or use MNPD police vehicles when employed in this capacity.   3. Metropolitan Nashville Police Department police officers may be employed by a business or organization that is registered with the State of Tennessee - Department of Commerce and Insurance as a Proprietary Security Organization. Businesses can register with the State and employ officers directly. Businesses can employ officers in uniform, However, Metropolitan Nashville Police Department police officers are not permitted to drive or use MNPD police vehicles when employed in this capacity.
