Nashville Traffic Signal Timing Optimization Project
In 2004, Metro Public Works initiated a project to develop and implement new signal timing plans for Metro Nashville. Traffic engineering industry standards recommend retiming traffic signals every 3 to 5 years. Therefore in 2009, Metro Public Works secured American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds to begin developing new timing plans for signals that were originally retimed between 2004 and 2006. The intent of the project, which was funded with 100 percent Federal funds, is to make the traffic signals perform at their maximum efficiency, resulting in reduced vehicle stops and delays. In addition, the project included evaluation of the improved systems in order to document benefits.
Corridors to be Evaluated
The nine corridors being evaluated are:
- Gallatin Pike
- Murfreesboro Pike
- Bell Road/Hickory Hollow Parkway
- Nolensville Pike/Harding Place
- 21st Avenue South/Hillsboro Pike
- West End Avenue/Harding Pike
- Lebanon Pike/State Route 45/Andrew Jackson Parkway (Hermitage area)
- Charlotte Pike
- White Bridge Road
Updated signal timing plans were implemented on 21st Avenue South/Hillsboro Pike in November 2010. The Nolensville Pike/Harding Place corridor is scheduled for implementation in early December 2010. The West End Avenue/Harding Road corridor is scheduled for implementation in January 2011.
Traffic Signal Optimization Study Legends
- Green lines on map signify Phase 1 completions in 2005
- Red lines on map signify Phase 2 completions in 2007
- Orange lines on map signify Phase 3 completions in 2008
- Red lines on map signify TDOT/ City of Brentwood completions in 2007
All previous phases of the Signal Timing Optimization Program resulted in notable reductions in traffic congestion, travel time, and fuel consumption, as well as measurable environmental improvements in air quality.
