How did the tornado sirens come about?

In 1998,Davidson County experienced a major tornado, leaving businesses and homes damaged or destroyed and some people injured. One young man lost his life after being trapped under a fallen tree in Centennial Park. In the wake of that tragedy, Nashville applied for and received a federal grant to install a tornado warning system to alert those persons in large outdoor areas across Davidson County about imminent severe weather. The tornado warning system has been in place since 2002.
