Metro Nashville Public School Recycling Program

Metro Nashville Public School System has a recycling program through its contract with Allied Waste. Schools receive a recycling dumpster. Additionally, some schools host Metro Public Works public recycling drop offs on their campus.

What can be recycled at MNPS schools

ALL PAPER: office paper, magazines, junk mail, newspaper, computer paper, notebook paper, phone books, paperback books, construction paper, brown paper bags

ALL BOXES: milk cartons (empty), cardboard boxes, food boxes (clean - no food), .All boxes should be broken down and placed in the recycling dumpster.

ALL PLASTIC CONTAINERS #1-7: drink bottles and their caps, detergent & cleaner bottles and their caps, yogurt/cottage cheese and other dairy "tubs" and their lids (please empty containers)

ALL METAL CANS: food and drink cans (please empty cans)

This fall Keep Tennessee Beautiful (KTnB) and the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) have teamed up as part of a corporate partnership to better educate students, coaches, officials and principals on the importance of recycling and litter collection. Good Sports Recycle - Over 3.6 tons! Congratulations to Overton High School

Cheer CardsOverton High School is the winner of the first Goods Sports Recycle Challenge! All total, Overton and McGavock High School students and faculty collected over 3.6 tons of recycling during the week of October 20 - 24. QRS Recycling presented an award of $200 to Overton High School and an award of $100 to McGavock High Schooll. Metro Beautification, Metro Public Works, Mayor Karl Dean, the Tennesseean, MNPS, and QRS Recycling have teamed up to encourage and support school recycling at sports event with the first Good Sports Recycling Challenge between Overton and McGavock High School. During the week of October 20 - 24, both schools were challenged to collect as much recycling as possible. The winner was announced at halftime of the Overton/McGavock football game on Friday, October 24.

 

School Recycling Program Highlights

During school year 2006-07 the MNPS recycling program was expanded to include 80 schools. Nashville School of the Arts received the 2007 Top Recycling School Award ~ a $250 award from Allied Waste Industries and other prizes from Metro Public Works and Metro Beautification.

Allied Waste and Metro Nashville Public Schools began a pilot recycling program in April 2006 beginning with schools in the Hunters Lane Cluster. Eleven schools were involved in the pilot program. Metro Public Works Divisions, Waste and Beautification & Environment Commission, provided operational and educational support of the program. Neely's Bend Middle School received the Excellence in Recycling Award. Metro Beautification & Environment Commission hosted a luncheon for the faculty and staff. Allied Waste Industries presented a $250 award to the school.
