The Odor Control Process
Refer to schematic below.
Using bacteria, a biofilter removes odors from an air stream (1). A fan (2) transports the air from the odor source through a humidifier to the biofilter. A plenum (3) at the base of the biofilter distributes the air evenly throughout the filter. Three to five feet of media (4) on top of the plenum serves as a growth site for bacteria, which pull the odorant compounds from the air stream and use them as a food source for growth. The media may be organic, such as wood chips, or inorganic and have the appearance of small lava rock. Nutrients may be added to the media to assist in bacterial growth. The purified air is discharged (5) through the top of the media into the atmosphere. Biofilters provide a high degree of odor removal in a cost-efficient manner without expensive and hazardous chemicals.
