John Arriola
About John Arriola Your County Clerk
John is a native and lifetime resident of Nashville. He graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.
John’s interest and longtime endeavors in healthcare began when he became Vice President of Nashville Memorial Hospital, a 314 bed acute care facility. John was responsible for managing all construction projects, office building management, retail pharmacy and the home health agency. He also worked with physicians in developing the first cancer services program in the Madison/Old Hickory/Goodlettsville area.
John served as Executive Assistant to U.S. Representative Bob Clement. In 1990 he was elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives. Mr. Arriola served as State Representative for the 53rd District for twelve years, six of which he held the position of Assistant Majority Leader.
He led the fight for passage of legislation and funding for Home and Community Based Care in Tennessee. He was instrumental in revising Tennessee’s child care standards and welfare system. John passed the first legislation creating the Traumatic Brain Injury Council, giving families a resource for information and financial aid.
Mr. Arriola has received the Jane Kennedy Excellence in Aging Award and the AARP Home and Community Based Care Award. He is a former board member of the Lupus Foundation and Senior Citizens, Inc. and currently is on the board of NAMI.
Continuing his service to the elderly and disabled, John is currently a member of the Tennessee Commission on Aging. Governor Phil Bredesen appointed John as a delegate to the White House Conference on aging in Washington, D.C. There, he helped make recommendations to Congress to renew the Older Americans Act.
John’s mother and father are Norman and Viola Couser of Nolensville, TN. He currently owns the family style restaurant they began in 1987, across from the Nashville Zoo. His wife, Michelle is the daughter of J.D. and Anita Elliott of Madison. John and Michelle reside here in Nashville with their two daughters, Katie Elizabeth and Jessica Nicole.
