Gas/Mechanical Division Adds Two Inspectors
Joey Hicks and Shannon Roberts have joined the Department of Codes & Building Safety as Gas/Mechanical Inspectors. Joey Hicks has over 25 years experience in the H.V.A.C trade. Prior to joining Codes, Joey worked for C & C Mechanical. Shannon Roberts has over 16 years H.A.V.C experience. Before coming to Codes, Shannon worked for the Lee Company.
Jack Tarkington Retires
Jack Tarkington, Codes plans Examiner, has been named City Manager of Paris, Tennessee. Tarkington, a fixture in Metro Government for many years, will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Paris city government. Jack is originally from Paris, Tennessee, and welcomes the opportunity to return to his home town. We thank him for his dedication and service to Metropolitan Nashville and wish him continued success in public service. His hard work and excellent attitude will be missed.
NOTICE of New Code Adoptions
Effective May 1, 2007, the Metro Nashville Department of Codes and Building
Safety will begin enforcing the provisions of the 2006 International
Building, Plumbing, Mechanical/Fuel Gas and Energy Conservation
Codes and the 2006 International Residential Code for 1 & 2 Family
Dwellings. At this time the Metro Fire Marshal’s Office will also
begin enforcing the 2006 Fire Codes – NFPA 1 and NFPA 101. We currently
enforce the 2002 National Electrical Code. More
Metropolitan Nashville Sets All Time Building Construction
Record
2006 saw Metro’s biggest year in permits issued, second largest in
residential permits and a whopping 25% increase in permits
for residential additions and alterations.
“These numbers show the vitality and strength of Nashville’s economy,” said Mayor Bill Purcell. “We continue to grow in a healthy way, from the new skyscrapers coming downtown to the residential communities being build across the county, to the home renovations in the city’s older neighborhoods.” More
History of Codes Administration Airs on Metro Channel 3
The “History of Codes” video series continues to air on Metro
Channel 3. The goal of the programs is to raise the public’s awareness
of the role of Codes Administration has played in the community and to
highlight its continuing role as the other “public safety” department
in Metropolitan government.
When completed this spring the series will comprise ten programs
which will highlight Code’s role in the evolution of Nashville
into a major American city. These programs are now available as streaming

Codes Department goes “Live” with KIVA Software
system
Two years ago, the Metro Government began the process of
replacing its out-dated mainframe based computer system, which included
the selection of a land information and permitting product called KIVA – from
Accela Systems.
KIVA is replacing the 1970’s era hierarchical database with a more efficient, relational-style database, which will give the Codes Department the ability to manage and report information far more efficiently than ever before. More
Codes Announces Building Re-Inspection Fees
Effective July 1, 2006, the Department of Codes Administration
will begin requiring a thirty-dollar ($30.00) reinspection fee for all
building reinspections. The building reinspection permit fee must be
paid to the department before we will reinspect work, which has been
previously rejected. A request for reinspection will not be accepted
until the appropriate reinspection fee has been received. For more information,

Property Standards Adds New Community Support Program
The Property Standards Division has added a new community support
program to compliment its current set of programs. The new program is
called the Strategic Neighborhood Initiative (SNI). Under this program,
neighborhood groups can identify up to a five-block area within their
neighborhood for intensive code enforcement. More
Metro Updates Codes – Adopts 2000 Editions
The Metropolitan Government recently passed Council Ordinance
#BL 2005-796 adopting the 2002 edition of the National Electrical Code© and
the 2003 International Codes Council/ANSI A-117.1 Code© Accessible
and Usable Buildings and Facilities.
Credit Cards Accepted for Permit Application Payments
The Codes department now accepts VISA and MasterCard as payment

The old Contractor Debit account program has been discontinued.

of Directors

Metro Updates Codes – Adopts 2000 Editions
The Metropolitan Government recently passed Council Ordinance
#BL 2002-1142 adopting the 2000 editions of the Standard Building Code©,
Standard Plumbing Code©, Standard Fuel Gas Code©, Standard
Mechanical Code© as well as the 2000 edition of the International
Energy Conservation Code© to govern the construction of buildings
and structures. The ordinance also adopted the 2000 editions of NFPA
1 and 101, the NFPA Fire Code© and Life Safety Code©, respectfully. More

Reporting dilapidated buildings, graffiti on private property,
abandoned vehicles and other code violations is now a little easier in
Nashville. With the click of a mouse, residents can access the “Codes
Online Customer Service Desk” from a computer. More
