Assuring
Public Safety
Metro continues
to focus on assuring that our citizens are safe by providing the necessary
personnel, training, and equipment to our Police, Fire, Office of Emergency
Management and Public Health Departments. The 2003 budget targets funding
for overtime in both Police and Fire Departments. The budget supports
the implementation of the Police audit recommendations and the hiring
of School Resource Officers.
Improvements
are also implemented for General Session Court, Juvenile Court and for
the Juvenile Court Clerk. Some specific enhancements for public safety
include:
- Homeland
Security and Bioterrorism PreparednessThe 2003 budget identifies
funding for both the Office of Emergency Management and the Public Health
Department to improve Metro's homeland security posture.
- Correctional
Health ServicesAdditional funding has been targeted to support
the health care delivery system for inmates of the Davidson County Sheriff's
Department. Inmates receive screening, health assessment, mental health
services, dental services, medication administration, sick call emergency
care and chronic care follow up.
- Paramedic
Cross TrainingThe budget will continue to support the success
of the Fire Department's cross-training program for existing Paramedics
to be certified as Firefighters. Benefits of the cross-training program
for Nashville have already been realized by the department's ability
to place more Paramedics on the street lowering response times by 25%
last year alone.
