BILL PURCELL, MAYOR December 1999 My fellow citizens, As Nashville enters the new century we are also in a period of transition. A new mayor and a new council have assumed office committed to building on the progress of our city and enhancing the quality of our schools and our neighborhoods. Our quality of life and positive business climate have attracted major new corporations and professional sports franchises that demonstrate the vitality of Nashville to the nation and the world. But it is our people that really define our city. Nashville's growing and diverse population, working together through our schools, community organizations and business community, make our city one of America's great place to live and work. In order to continue our progress, citizens and business leaders must be well informed about the government's financial condition and engaged in the public debate needed to set our priorities. One of the most important tools available to achieve this goal is the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. It provides an accurate and complete picture of our financial condition, together with historical comparisons that allow us to better understand important trends in our financial affairs. In the coming months as we discuss important challenges that must be addressed, the information in this report will help all of us to make informed judgements about the future of our city. In order to expand access to this important information it will, for the first time, be published on the Internet enabling virtual access through computers in our homes, businesses, schools and libraries. This step will also enable people and businesses with on interest in Nashville throughout the state, the nation and the world to easily access this report. It is my goal to continue to expand access to information in all areas of our government. I look forward to working with the Metropolitan Council and the citizens of Nashville to ensure that we have a government based on sound financial principals, meeting the needs of our citizens today and into the future. Sincerely,
Bill Purcell |
