MLK student's team wins international geography contest
Rising eighth-grader Dallas Simons was one of three students representing the USA at last week's National Geographic World Championship in Tampa. Dallas and two other students from North Dakota and North Carolina narrowly defeated the German and French teams for the title; eighteen countries from as far away as Singapore and Nigeria sent teams to the contest.

Each team studied world almanacs, newspapers and Internet sites to expand their knowledge of the world's people and places. "If you're interested in it," Dallas told the Associated Press, "you remember it."

The US students won the final round by correctly answering questions about the nation of Bahrain and the Mediterranean island of Crete. This was the fourth time the US team has won the world competition since its beginning in 1993.

Dallas lives in Bellevue and has also attended Bellevue Middle and Harpeth Valley Elementary.

Early Childhood Programs Reach Out to Community
Metro Schools and the Mayor's Office of Children and Youth invited representatives from Early Childhood programs throughout Davidson County to a meeting June 25 to
learn about the curriculum and materials that Metro Schools plans to use in its early childhood programs in 2003-2004.

The goal of the meeting, according to Angie Herdman of the Mayor's Office, is
to let these different programs, which include Head Start, private schools,
non-profit agencies, family child care, univerisities and faith-based child care programs; know what Metro Schools will be using so that they might consider using similar materials for their students. By coordinating efforts, programs will ensure that all students who enter school will have had similar educational experiences.

ELL Program Assistant Wins National Award
The Board of Education congratulated Susan Howell, program assistant for English Language Learners, on January 13 for her recent award from the US Department of Education. Ms. Howell was honored for outstanding achievement during the Summit on English Language Acquisition in Washington, DC last month. This week, she received a certificate from Director of Schools Dr. Pedro E. Garcia and Board of Education chair Pam Garrett.

Governor holds truancy discussion at McGavock High
Truancy at McGavock High's been cut in half over the last two years, and that's one reason Governor Bredesen held his first statewide "Truancy Summit" at McGavock on April 8. Police, educators, court officials and community leaders met to discuss ways of keeping students in school.

Schools honor “Teachers of the Year”
One hundred and twenty-six outstanding Metro teachers were honored Monday evening, April 12, at the district’s annual “Teacher of the Year” ceremony - and, for the first time, three “Principals of the Year” were named as well.

Teachers at each school vote to select a “Teacher of the Year” for their building, and then three teachers are named districtwide winners, one each for elementary, middle and high school levels.

Community leaders visit schools
The Chamber of Commerce's annual "School Visit Day" brought over 100 business and community leaders into Metro schools on Wednesday. They met at Antioch High for comments from Mayor Purcell and Dr. Garcia, then toured Antioch, Kennedy Middle and Maxwell Elementary for a first-hand look at school operations.

Nashville School of the Arts musician performs for national project
NSA freshman Jewelia Lawrence is one of several local musicians who were recorded in April for a National Park Service educational video currently being produced at the Renaissance Center in Dickson.

Her old-time fiddle tunes will be heard in a video history of the Fort Donelson battlefield, which the Park Service will distribute to middle and high schools across the country this fall.

New elementary school in Antioch
Edison Elementary School will open in fall 2004 at Hamilton Church Road and Mt. View Road. This brick veneer building will have space for about six hundred students, and will include a two-story classroom wing, a library, cafeteria and PE room.
