ADA Compliance Division
Project in the Spotlight

The new playground at the Tom Joy Head Start Center was completed in late summer 2003. This playground is a model, from the parking lot to the path of travel, to the poured-in-place surface and the accessible ground-level and raised play components.

Parking
The accessible parking area has a 2% maximum cross-slope and running slope, and includes van-accessible parking with proper signage.

Pathway
The accessible path of travel from the parking lot to the sidewalk leading to the playground entrance has a cross slope of 2% of less. The running slope is less than 5%, which meant handrails were not required.

Entrance
The entrance to the playground meets and exceeds the required width for accessibility.

Ground Level Play Components
Accessible ground-level play components are integrated into the play area.

Transfer stations allow access to elevated play components.

Accessible Route
As required, accessible ground-level play components are placed along an accessible route in different parts of the playground.

Compliant Surface

Relay Service 711

The State of Tennessee provides a relay service at 711 so people who use TTYs can have phone conversations with people who do not have TTYs.

This service is completely confidential, available to anyone 24 hours a day/7 days a week, for calls anywhere in the United States or its territories, at no charge to either person in the conversation.

Dialing 711 works whether or not the person placing the call is using a TTY, since operators who answer use voice and TTY.
