LTD Benefit Period

Benefit Waiting Period
The benefit waiting period is the time you must be continuously disabled before you become eligible for LTD benefits. The waiting period for LTD benefits is 180 days.
Length of Benefits
LTD benefits are payable based on your age at the time of your disability:
  • If you become disabled before age 62, LTD benefits may continue during disability until you reach age 65.
  • If you become disabled at age 62 or older, the benefit duration depends on your age when your disability begins:
    Age Maximum Benefit Period
    62 3 years and 6 months
    63 3 years
    64 2 years and 6 months
    65 2 years
    66 1 year and 9 months
    67 1 year and 6 months
    68 1 year and 3 months
    69+ 1 year
Transitioning from Short-Term to Long-Term Disability
If you are transitioning from STD to LTD, you will not be required to file a new claim form.
When Benefits Are Paid
LTD benefits are paid monthly for as long as you are eligible to receive them, up to the maximum benefit period. Benefits are not paid during the benefit waiting period (see "Length of Benefits" above).
When Benefits Begin
LTD benefits begin after 180 days of continuous disability, that is, after you have completed the benefit waiting period (see "Benefit Waiting Period" above).
When Benefits End
LTD benefits end automatically on the earliest of:
  • the date you are no longer disabled
  • the date your maximum benefit period ends
  • the date you die
  • the date benefits become payable by any other LTD plan you are insured under while working for another employer during a period of temporary recovery
  • the date you fail to provide proof of continued disability and entitlement to benefits
Leave and LTD Benefits
If you receive sick-leave pay while you are eligible for LTD benefits, your LTD benefit may be adjusted.
NOTE: Paid-time-off (PTO) benefits for employees of Metro Nashville Hospital Authority, Public Health Department, and Metro Nashville may differ from PTO benefits described here. See your departmenal Human Resources Coordinator.
Vacation Pay and LTD Benefits
Any vacation pay you receive when you leave your job at Metro to go out on LTD will not affect your LTD benefits.
Survivor Benefits
If you die while receiving LTD benefits, your eligible survivor may be entitled to a benefit based on your earnings while you were working.
