Sick Leave Use
Sick leave must be approved by your supervisor. You are expected to call your supervisor as soon as possible and no later than one hour after your shift starts.
It's a good idea to save as many sick days as you can. You may need the days if you become seriously ill. This will ensure that you have a paycheck coming in while you recover. If you elected STD insurance that can be another source of income when sick. For more information, please see the Short-Term Disability section in the handbook.
Using Sick Days to Care for a Family Member
You may use up to five sick days per calendar year from your accrued balance to care for a sick spouse, parent or child who lives in your house or for whom you are the primary caregiver.
Time Off Under the Family Medical Leave Act
For leave covered under FMLA, you may use up to 20 days of accrued sick leave per calendar year to care for a sick spouse, parent or child who lives in your house or for whom you are the primary caregiver. FMLA leave must be approved. See your department HR Coordinator for more information.
