Campaign to Promote Racial Justice

The Campaign to Promote Racial Justice is the Commission’s 4-phase endeavor to improve race relations and address diversity issues in Nashville. The Campaign employs education, outreach and compliance enforcement as a means of achieving these goals.

Roles for Officials: 1. Take Stock 2. Implement Initiatives 3. Communicate Ideas 4. Envision Future

In September 2000, the National League of Cities (NLC) held its first national day focusing on “undoing” racism in America. More than 400 cities stepped forward by issuing proclamations in support of this effort. In addition, many cities and towns across America have established special task forces, held community meetings and dialogues, conducted training sessions for city employees, established collaborations to support local efforts, and organized events to recognize diversity.

The Metro Human Relations Commission joined the National League of Cities in celebrating National Race Equality Day on September 19, 2001 by hosting a Race Equality Day Luncheon. Commissioner Sonnye Dixon was recognized as Chair of the Commission’s Race Relations/Diversity Committee.
