What Is Title VI?

Many Metro Governmental Departments are the recipients of Federal Financial Assistance and as a result are required to comply with the provisions of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. What is Title VI, you ask?

Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act requires that “No person in the United States shall, on the grounds of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.”

It shall be against the policy of the Metropolitan Government to discriminate against an individual based upon that person's race, color or national origin. This policy applies to applicants for employment and current employees as well as subrecipients and subcontractors of Metropolitan Government Departments that receive Federal Funding.

Metro Departments that receive federal financial assistance are prohibited from discriminating against individuals on the basis of race, color, national origin or that federal financial assistance may be jeopardized. This discrimination also includes denying service to a non-English speaking person or requiring that they provide their own interpreter to receive services.
