October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month!

logoSince its launch in 2004, the United States has observed National Cyber Security Awareness Month each October. In today’s connected society, we rely on many devices, not just computers but also smart phones and tablets to connect to an ever increasing multitude of resources. Now more than at any time information is more accessible – and more vulnerable.

National Cyber Security Awareness Month is an initiative founded by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) aimed at raising cyber security awareness. Ultimately, cyber security is everyone’s responsibility. Understanding that each of us has a critical role in securing our cyber assets goes a long way towards keeping information secure, both in our personal and professional lives.

Cyber Security is Our Shared Responsibility

Data DestructionMetro is a proud participant in National Cyber Security Awareness Month.  Each week during October will focus on an important topic in information security designed to help you better secure information. Week four’s topic is Data Destruction. Information that is no longer needed needs to be destroyed in a manner based on what it contains. Media containing confidential or restricted information must be destroyed so that the information cannot be retrieved.

Remember: STOP. THINK. CONNECT.

  • STOP – Before you use the Internet, take time to understand the risks and learn how to spot potential problems.
  • THINK – Take a moment to be certain the path ahead is clear. Watch for warning signs and consider how your actions online could impact your safety, or your family’s.
  • CONNECT – Enjoy the Internet with greater confidence, knowing you’ve taken the right steps to safeguard yourself and your computer.
