June 18, 2002 - The Metropolitan Action Commission offers residents of Davidson County a chance to receive their General Equivalency Diploma (GED) through the agency's Self-Sufficiency Program.
On Thursday, clients that have successfully passed the GED exam will receive their diploma at the agency's 12th Annual Award Day Ceremony at 11:30 a.m. at the Banquet Hall of Nashville (2222 Metro Center Blvd). Students that successfully completed the Job Training and College Preparatory College courses will also receive special recognition at the ceremony.
"Many times the only obstacle that prevents our clients from securing employment or impedes their chances of moving into a position that offers better pay is the education barrier," said Cynthia Croom, Executive Director of Metro Action.
Top scholars that have excelled in their studies will receive the Packard Science Scholarship for admission into Tennessee State University or a scholarship from Nashville State Technical Institute.
Other awards that will be presented include the Adult Basic Education's Elite Achiever Award and the Installation of GED Honor Society Members.
"Most of the participants in the Self-Sufficiency program originally came to us because of various situations that required emergency temporary assistance. We not only addressed those needs when they came, we identified educational deficiencies and provided a means for them to gain skills which should improve their chances of becoming self-sufficient," said Croom.
In addition to the Self-Sufficiency program, Metro Action provides services such as rent and utility assistance, cooling and heating assistance, homeless prevention, and the summer lunch program. The agency also oversees the Head Start Program.
Howard Gentry, Jr., Vice Mayor Pro-Tem, will deliver the commencement address to the 'Class of 2002'.
