April 22, 2003 - Today the Metropolitan Action Commission (MAC) announced the sites for the 2003 Summer Food Service Program for Davidson County. These sites will be responsible for serving breakfast and lunch to any child, up to age 18 years, beginning June 2 through July 25 from 7 a.m. until 9 a.m. for breakfast and 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. for lunch, Monday through Friday.

“The objective of the program is to provide a nutritionally-balanced meal for low-income children who participate in the free and reduced school lunch program. There are many children that benefit from this program and we very proud to be able to provide this service to Nashville’s youth,” said Charles E. Jones, director of MAC Community Programs.

Youth may go to any site and receive breakfast and/or lunch throughout the summer.

There is still an opportunity for other local organizations to become a summer food site. Churches, community groups, summer school programs, summer camps or any other group that will serve children for any length of time during the summer are encouraged to submit an application. “We are trying to ensure that all children are served in the areas in which they live or in programs that will serve them this summer,” said Jones

To submit an application, go to the MAC website at www.nashville.gov/mac, call 615-862-8860 or come by the MAC office, located at 1624 5th Avenue North.

“Once approved organizations are required to attend an orientation session on Wednesday, May 28 or Thursday, May 29 at the Z. Alexander Looby Branch Library (2301 Metro Center Boulevard). Organizers may attend the 8 a.m. until 12 noon session or the 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. session,” said Jones.

Last year the Summer Food Service Program supplied 245,068 lunches and 33,400 breakfast meals. MAC is the community action organization for Nashville and Davidson County.
