September 26, 2003 - The Metropolitan Action Commission (MAC) named Dr. Anita Conn as the new Head Start Director of the Nashville-Davidson County program. The Head Start program serves 1,485 Davidson County children, by providing pre-school education for children of low-income families.
Dr. Conn received a Bachelor of Science degree from Lee University, a Master of Education degree, a Diploma for Advanced Study in Teaching (D.A.S.T) and a Doctorate of Philosophy from Emory University in Atlanta.
“Dr. Conn brings a wealth of experience from both educational and daycare environments. She has served as an independent educational provider, school principal, child care center director, and college instructor,” said Cynthia Croom, Executive Director of MAC.
Dr. Conn has designed and helped implement three state-approved staff development courses (Writing Across the Curriculum, Instructional Management, and Curriculum and Instruction), for the state of Georgia.
The Head Start program, which serves children ages 3-5 years, is the largest provider of early childhood education in Davidson County. The program focuses on providing pre schoolers from low-income families an enhanced academic foundation as they enter Kindergarten. The program conducts educational assessments and health screenings to determine if students have developmental, health, or mental barriers that may hinder their academic success.
“I am very excited about the direction of our Head Start Program. Dr. Conn is committed to the philosophy and challenges of Head Start. I am confident in her ability to move the program to greater heights as we prepare our students to be great learners,” said Croom.
