China Educators to Visit Metro Action’s Head Start Program on Monday

April 29, 2004 - Twelve pre-school educators from China will visit Metropolitan Action Commission’s Berry International Head Start Center on Monday, May 3. The purpose of their visit is to learn more about the wide range of possibilities offered in preschool education in the United States.

The group, which is a part of a professional exchange program agreement between the U.S. Department of Education and the Chinese Ministry of Education, selected the Head Start program because of its wide array of support services to children.

The Berry Head Start site was selected due to its enrollment of a significant amount of children from multicultural families who now reside in Nashville. Children representing more than 20 nationalities are enrolled at the Berry Head Start Center.

Of the 260 children at Berry, for approximately 160 of them, English is not their primary language or may not be spoken in the home at all.

Nashville is one of four cities that will be visited by this group. New York City, Washington, DC and Portland are also on their itinerary.

The group is expected to arrive at Berry at 9 a.m. The Berry International Head Start Center is located at 2233 Winford Avenue.

Note: The group will have a translator traveling with them. Media should not ask the group about world issues that span outside of Education, as they are not prepared to respond.
