Educators from Four European Countries to Visit Metro Action Head Start
May 13, 2004 - The Metropolitan Action Commission’s Tom Joy Head Start Center will host educators from Finland, Sweden, Germany and Portugal on Friday, May 14 at 9 a.m.
The group, who are studying the different educational systems and intervention methods in early childhood education, are a part of the Trans Atlantic Consortium on Early Childhood Intervention. The consortium is a funded project under the Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College.
Dr. Dale Farran, professor in the Departments of Teaching and Learning and Psychology and Human Development, will join the group as they tour the center. Dr. Farran is also a member of the Board of Commissioners for the Metropolitan Action Commission.
The group will visit several classes at Tom Joy Head Start to observe the children and meet with the Head Start Administration to discuss curriculum and support services in place to help children establish a solid academic foundation.
Nashville’s Head Start program, which has an enrollment of 1,485, is the largest provider of pre-school education in Davidson County. The Tom Joy center is the largest Head Start center, with more than 280 children enrolled.
