Whirlpool Donates More than 100 Air Conditioners to Metro Action

Metro Action’s Summer Cooling Program Provides Free Fans/Air Conditioners to Elderly/Disabled

June 2, 2004 - By mid-May the Metropolitan Action Commission (MAC) had distributed its entire inventory of free air conditioners. With temperatures already hovering around the mid 80s and lower 90s, this could have meant a long summer for elderly and disabled citizens of Nashville if it wasn’t for the contribution of one of the world’s leading manufacturers of home appliances.

The Whirlpool Corporation, a long time supporter of MAC’s Summer Cooling Program, plans to donate more than 100 room air conditioners on Wednesday, June 9 at 10 am. The units will be delivered to MAC’s Storage and Pick Up site, located at Shurgard Storage, 1615 Charlotte Avenue.

"We at the LaVergne Division share the concerns of the community and our neighbors, and we are glad to be able to offer our assistance through the Metro Cooling Program," said Whirlpool’s LaVergne division vice president Jim Gifford.

MAC provides fans and air conditioners to Davidson County residents who are over the age of 60, disabled or have a medical condition that is exacerbated by extreme heat during the spring and summer months.

"Our company and our people wish many years of cool comfort to the recipients of our products. We thank Quality Express who has provided transportation for the units, and the impressive and effective Metro Cooling Program, which has served as a benchmark for others in the country,” Gifford said.

The Whirlpool Corporation is the world's leading manufacturer and marketer of major home appliances, with annual sales of over $12 billion, 68,000 employees, and nearly 50 manufacturing and technology research centers around the globe.

MAC’s Summer Cooling Program, funded almost totally by donations, rely heavily on contributions from corporations such as Whirlpool, community groups, and private citizens in order to assist residents during this time of the year. Donations can be made to the agency by calling 615-862-8860.
