Purcell Encourages Families to Celebrate Family Day

September 24 , 2004 -- Mayor Bill Purcell joined the Nashville Prevention Partnership in urging families across the city to participate in Family Day on Monday, September 27, 2004. Family Day is a national effort to promote parental engagement as a simple, effective way to reduce youth substance abuse and rear healthier children. Parents are encouraged to make time in their hectic schedules to sit down and talk with children during mealtime or some other designated time of day.

“It’s one of those special opportunities to engage the children in our homes, “ said Mayor Bill Purcell. “Whether the primary caregiver is a mother, father, aunt, uncle, grandparent, sister or brother – all children deserve to have someone set aside time just to talk about their day, and the breakfast or dinner table is a good place to start.”

Purcell urged families to participate in Family Day during lunch at the Dudley Head Start Center where parents enjoyed a turkey and spaghetti meal with their young children.

Family Day is gaining momentum across the country with government agencies, corporate America and nonprofit organizations. The Mayor’s Office of Children and Youth, Metro Social Services, Nashville Prevention Partnership, Lipscomb University, Priority Hospice, Publix and Cumulus Broadcasting sponsor local efforts.
