MAYOR TO ANNOUNCE BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Committee to promote walking and bicycling in Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (October 24, 2008) -

Mayor Karl Dean will announce today at the Walk Bike Nashville Annual Meeting that he has issued an executive order to create a Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) to further Nashville’s efforts to become a more walkable and bikeable city.

“Walking and bicycling are healthy and environmentally-friendly forms of transportation that need to be easier to do in our city. It is my goal that at the end of my term as mayor, Nashville will have been transformed into one of the great walkable and bikeable cities in our country,” Dean said.

“I look forward to working with this advisory committee to further the relationship between government and our community advocates in this area, and to promote walking and bicycling in Nashville.”

The formation of such a committee is recommended in the Strategic Plan for Sidewalks & Bikeways, which was recently updated by the Public Works and Planning departments through a directive from the mayor.

The Walk Bike Nashville Annual Meeting is tonight starting at 6 p.m. at the Nashville Farmer’s Market, 900 Rosa L. Parks Blvd.
