RESOLUTION NO. RS2000-179
A resolution proclaiming April 12, 2000, as "William Edmondson Day" in Nashville.
WHEREAS, Cheekwood Museum of Art is celebrating the art of native Nashvillian sculptor William Edmondson; and
WHEREAS, Cheekwood Museum of Art is currently showing The Art of William Edmondson, the first retrospective in twenty years and has written an exhibition catalogue, highlighting the influences of his life and sculpture; and
WHEREAS, on April 12, 2000, a celebration will take place at Rose Park Middle School, with a performance of African American history through song, drama, and poetry, based on the life and times of William Edmondson; and
WHEREAS, in conjunction with the show, there will be a "William Edmondson Day" at Murrell School, Rose Park Middle School and Carter Lawrence Middle School to let the children know about this famous artist who lived at 14th Avenue, South, the site now of Murrell School; and
WHEREAS, William Edmondson (1874-1951) was the first African American to have a one-man exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City in 1937 and was one of the most important self-taught sculptors of the twentieth century; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council honor the late William Edmondson on his talents and as one of the most outstanding folk carvers.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
SECTION 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming April 12, 2000, as "William Edmondson Day" in Nashville.
SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is hereby directed to prepare a certificate to be presented to the Cheekwood Museum of Art in recognition of "William Edmondson Day."
SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
