RESOLUTION NO. RS2001-608
A resolution recognizing the 50th Anniversary of Harpeth Hall School.
WHEREAS, Harpeth Hall School began in the fall of 1951, as a continuation of the rich history that was started at the Ward-Belmont school; and
WHEREAS, Harpeth Hall is Nashville's only independent school for young women, grades 5-12; and
WHEREAS, in the 2000-2001 school year, Harpeth Hall, celebrates its 50th anniversary with numerous events, celebrations and seminars that will commemorate the school's history; and
WHEREAS, some of the schools achievements over the years include: in 1996, they built the first student-funded Habitat for Humanity home in Tennessee, in 1998 the school was among the first to add a dedicated faculty position to oversee its service efforts, was honored with the 2000 "Presidential Award" for Service Learning, and for 2001 set a goal to contribute 50,000 hours of community service in honor of the 50th anniversary of the school; and
WHEREAS, the Harpeth Hall/Ward-Belmont "Distinguished Alumna Award" was established in 1993; and
WHEREAS, candidates for the "Distinguished Alumna Award" are women who: are trailblazers; display extraordinary gifts of leadership and organizational ability; are moving spirits in health, welfare, cultural, or civic affairs; have achieved wide recognition for professional excellence and leadership, and a vision, skill and commitment to make things happen; and
WHEREAS, some of Ward-Belmont/Harpeth Hall distinguished alumna are Tracy Caulkins, Idanell McMurry, Marguerite W. Sallee, Amy Grant and Sarah Colley Cannon known to many as "Minnie Pearl" the first recipient of this award; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize this fine school for their excellence, leadership and community service.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the 50th Anniversary of Harpeth Hall School.
SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Ann Teaff, Head of Harpeth Hall School.
SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
