RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-1298
A resolution recognizing the League of Women Voters.
WHEREAS, on Friday, February 14, 2003, the League of Women Voters is celebrating its 83rd Birthday of its founding; and
WHEREAS, the League of Women Voters believes that democratic government depends upon the informed and active participation of citizens in government; and
WHEREAS, the League of Women Voters were instrumental in the passage of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, giving women the right to vote and have a voice in America; and
WHEREAS, the League of Women Voters is a non-partisan organization whose purpose is to promote political responsibility through informed and active involvement of citizens in government; and
WHEREAS, through education, the League of Women Voters of Nashville encourages informed and effective citizen participation in elections and decision-making in government; and
WHEREAS, the League studies local government issues and produces public meetings and written information, including The Metro Blue Book and Know Your Government Officials of Davidson County to help citizens of Nashville be informed about and participate in local government in Davidson County; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the League of Women Voters for their outstanding contributions to the city and their citizen participation.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the League of Women Voters.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Luvenia Butler on behalf of the League of Women Voters.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
