RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-1302
A resolution recognizing Mary Wherry upon her retirement from service with the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County.
WHEREAS, on December 31, 2002, Mary Wherry, Assistant Director of Metro Parks and Recreation, retired after forty-two years of faithful service to her colleagues and the citizens of Davidson County; and
WHEREAS, Mary Wherry began her career organizing softball and volleyball teams, playing games with kids on the playground at Shelby Park and lending a listening ear while working through the ranks to become the Assistant Director; and
WHEREAS, during her tenure she has witnessed many changes within the park system from when the parks were segregated, community centers offered only sports, and few people heard of environmental education; and
WHEREAS, some of her specific accomplishments include creating the Warner Park Nature Center and urban nature programs, development of the cultural arts division, fostered the growth of the Tennessee Recreation and Parks Association, and helped bring in more than $1 million in federal grants to enhance the Urban Community Center programs; and
WHEREAS, Mary Wherry has exemplified the traits of a deep sense of responsibility, a lot of common sense, good rapport with children, integrity, bravery, and loyalty throughout her tenure; and
WHEREAS, Mary Wherry is to be commended for her professionalism, experience and knowledge for the recreational opportunities and welfare of children and she will sorely be missed not only as the assistant director but for her leadership in developing innovative ideas and programs; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Mary Wherry for her dedication to the Metro Parks and her accomplishments during her forty-two years of service and wish her much happiness on her retirement.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Mary Wherry upon her retirement from service with the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a printed scroll to be presented to Mary Wherry.
Section 3. This
Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The
Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
