RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-471
A resolution recognizing and commending the Hume-Fogg Magnet School Mock Trial Team on winning the 2004 City and State High School Mock Trial Competition.
WHEREAS, not only did Hume-Fogg Magnet School win the City Mock Trial competition but competed at the 2004 State High School Mock Trial Championship competition that was held on March 12 and 13, 2004 at the temporary courthouse facilities of the Metro Courts in MetroCenter along with 19 teams from across the state for the title; and
WHEREAS, The Hume-Fogg Team (an all female team comprised of seniors Sarah Allen, Hannah Choate, Carly Summers, Caroline Tenenbaum, Marissa Valz, and Susan Zheng) defeated two-time state and national champ Family Christian Academy, students from various home school programs from Chattanooga, to win the Tennessee Bar Association 2004 State High School Mock Trial Competition; and
WHEREAS, the case this year was a personal injury claim alleging that the plaintiff had sustained a broken jaw during the course of a high school soccer game; and
WHEREAS, the Mock Trial is designed to allow high school students with an interest in the law, trial advocacy, and/or debate to gain a greater understanding of the judicial system by actually participating in it; and
WHEREAS, the Mock Trial competition gives high school students an opportunity to assume the roles of trial lawyers and witnesses in a case, the parameters of which are set forth in a “problem” created by the Young Lawyers Division of the Tennessee Bar Association each year; and
WHEREAS, this teams remarkable performance in winning the 2004 State High School Mock Trial Competition earned them the opportunity to compete at the National Championship in Florida where they went on to place in the top ten; and
WHEREAS, the Hume-Fogg Magnet School Mock Trial Team has been inspired to greater heights by coaches Ken King, Jordan Kellar and Jennifer Gannum; and
WHEREAS, the achievement of this level of academic excellence requires dedication, hard work, practice and determination, and these exemplary young ladies have proven themselves to be formidable competitors, while exhibiting enthusiasm, team spirit, and a competitive drive in taking great pride and satisfaction in their tremendous success this season, and it is indeed appropriate to recognize them at this time; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the 2004 Hume-Fogg Magnet Mock Trial Team and convey their heartiest congratulations to the team.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and commending the Hume-Fogg Magnet School Mock Trial Team on winning the 2004 City and State High School Mock Trial Competition.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to coaches Ken King, Jordan Kellar, Jennifer Gannum and members of the winning team.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
