2005 Second Harvest Food Bank Drive
Three
weeks from today, many families will celebrate Thanksgiving. This holiday
brings great delight for most: a comfortable time to relax, to welcome
the crisp weather, and to enjoy a festive and filling dinner.
But for many less fortunate middle Tennesseans, the coming weeks will bring hunger. Their time will not be spent relaxing; it will be spent looking for basic sustenance. The crisp weather won’t be welcomed, because having too little to eat makes the cold even more biting. And the filling dinner may not exist at all – unless you help.
Second Harvest Food Bank needs your help to feed hungry Tennesseans. The assistance they provided to hundreds of individuals displaced by the hurricanes has left their food supplies dangerously low. It’s time to replenish their food supplies. The most needed food items include beef stew, chili, canned fruit, canned tuna, macaroni and cheese, and peanut butter.
By Wednesday, November 23rd – the day before Thanksgiving – our goal is to raise 25,000 pounds of food for Second Harvest Food Bank. May we count on you to get the word out to every Metro employee? We’ll need every employee to participate to accomplish this goal.
It’s time to show our support again. On Thursday, November 10th or Friday, November 11th, please ask a coordinator from your department to visit the Second Harvest warehouse (331 Great Circle Road; directions below). This coordinator will be asked to pick up food collection boxes—enough for your department. Each food collection box holds about 30 pounds of donations. Larger departments will want to appoint a coordinator for each major location. This coordinator should also distribute and set up the collection boxes at visible sites in the department and post notices about the campaign to encourage every employee’s generous donations. Second Harvest will also provide posters for your representative to post throughout your department.
The 2005 campaign runs Monday, November 14th – Wednesday, November 23rd, ending the day before Thanksgiving. At the end of the campaign, coordinators will also be asked to return the filled collection boxes back to the Second Harvest warehouse. However, if you have filled 10 boxes or more, Second Harvest will provide pick-up. (Drop me a note and I’ll help arrange the pick-up with Second Harvest staff).
Too busy to shop? Your dollars will stretch even further by participating in the “virtual food drive.” Simply print the attached shopping list, select products from the list, and send in a check to Second Harvest to cover the cost of that nutrition (or pay online using a credit card).
If you have questions, I’ll be glad to assist you in whatever manner I can. My phone is 862-6640, x72257, and my email is sharon.felton@nashville.gov. While this year has been difficult for many Americans, your generous donations will help bring delight to someone in need. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
