NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Metro’s Emergency Support Unit (ESU), one of city’s long-standing volunteer rescue units, is looking for a few good men and women to join the team.
Established in 1951, ESU is an organization of non-paid professionals who augment regular emergency management services provided by the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) during periods of actual or threatened emergencies, search and recovery operations and public events throughout Nashville.
ESU volunteers work closely with Metro agencies such as fire, police and public works on projects including:
- Water recovery operations for victims of drowning
- Search operations for missing or lost persons
- Evacuations
- Flood and storm damage assessments
- Removing debris and downed trees from roads
- Mutual aid assistance to neighboring counties
- Traffic and parking at special events
Metro OEM provides a wealth of training to prepare ESU volunteers to assist with emergency response efforts. ESU members will also learn to operate machinery and equipment such as operations vehicles, command boats and mobile generators to assist with rescue and recovery missions.
ESU volunteers must be at least 21 years old, have a high schools diploma and spare time. For more information or to complete an application, visit our Web site.
