OEM TEAMS UP WITH KROGER FOR THE MAYOR’S METRO-WIDE FOOD DRIVE FOR SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is once again partnering with Kroger this week to host its annual “fill the boat” food drive to help support Second Harvest Food Bank’s Emergency Food Box program.  The goal of the food drive is to fill the OEM boat with non-perishable food donations.

The drive will take place Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the parking lot of the Nipper’s Corner Kroger off Edmondson Pike in South Nashville.  The most-needed food items include canned meat (chicken/tuna), canned fruit, rice, canned vegetables, macaroni and cheese, pasta, canned or dried beans and peanut butter.

“Metro OEM is proud to once again launch its ‘fill the boat’ drive and look forward to witnessing the special generosity of our community members come through during these tough economic times,” Deputy Director Kevin Penney said.  “We believe, just as with last year, citizens will help answer the call of hunger for those most in need this holiday season.”

This year’s “fill the boat” challenge will be held in conjunction with Mayor Dean’s Metro-wide competitive food drive announced last week.  The competitive food drive is the first initiative in Nashville’s participation in Cities of Service, a national coalition of city mayors committed to filling needs in their communities by encouraging volunteerism and service.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee continues to encourage organizations and community groups to participate in the Feeding Hope Challenge by hosting food drives.  Every dollar donated purchases five pounds of food and provides four meals.
