Elementary Student Artists Secure Funds for Schools
Beautification Artwork Will Appear on Waste Trucks
NASHVILLE –Three budding artists from Metro Schools have been named grand prize winners of the Celebrate Nashville! Keep it Beautiful art contest.
Selected by a panel of Metro Council and Metro Arts Commission members, each grand prize winner will receive funds for their school’s art departments and their art will be featured in a citywide environmental campaign.
The first place winner is Abigail Howland of Una Elementary School; Cameron Webb of Granberry Elementary School, second place; and Morgan Hite of Hermitage Elementary School, third place.
“This is a great way to remind Nashville about the importance of recycling," said Mayor Bill Purcell. "Drawing on the creativity of our children, we can learn how to keep our city and our neighborhoods green and clean."
The competition was sponsored by Metro Schools, Metro Public Works and Red River Service Corporation, Nashville’s largest waste collection service provider. Entries were submitted by third and fourth grade students, with the grand prize and top 72 entries selected for display on the sides of waste trucks as part of a citywide beautification campaign over the next nine months.
The trucks, which will be on display during the downtown Nashville Gas Christmas Parade on Dec. 1, will be seen by more than 9,000 people a day as they service their routes.
Red River is a waste management company headquartered in Austin, Texas and is the largest local collector of residential waste serving more than 86,000 Nashville homes. Red River also conducts widespread commercial waste collection and recycling operations.
