Volunteers Needed For National 'Day of Action' on April 28th
Join Metro Beautification and local officials for a day of community action projects on Saturday, April 28. Nashville is honored to be one of just 10 U.S. cities to host this nationwide effort, and needs your help to make it a success. Make Nashville Glitter – Pick Up The Litter!
Four art students from Una Elementary, Glendale Elementary, Crieve Hall Elementary and Hickman Elementary have been named winners among the 70 finalists in the 2011"Nashville Beautiful" art contest. This year’s Grand Prize Winner is fourth grader Cadence Brown of Una Elementary. Cadence’s art will be featured in the Nashville Christmas Parade on Friday, December 2. Tiana Aldroubi of Glendale Elementary is the second-place winner; Sadie Trotter of Crieve Hall Elementary is the third-place winner; and Lanie Mucha of Hickman Elementary received this year’s Red River Award of Distinction. In honor of the winning students’ entries, their respective school’s art departments will receive $1,500, $1,000, $500 and $250 in prize money from Red River Service Corporation. Mayor Karl Dean will present award checks during a public viewing of all the artwork on Saturday, December 3. The winning entry from each MNPS grade school will be depicted on the sides of Red River waste collection trucks from December 2011 through May 2012, to be seen by more than 9,000 people each day while the trucks are on their routes. The art contest is sponsored by Red River, Metro Public Works, Metro Beautification & Environment Commission, Metro Nashville Public Schools, Metropolitan Arts Commission and Nashville Arts Coalition.
2011 Ann Chapman Holiday Lights Contest
Mayor Karl Dean, Metro Beautification & Environment, NewsChannel 5 and Nashville Electric Service are proud to announce the 24th year of the city's annual Holiday Lights Competition. The event is open to all residents of Davidson County, and awards are made in each Metro Councilmanic district. Judging criteria for the contest encourages residents to make their Holiday Lighting displays “green” by including Environmental Elements such as recycling themes or recycled items; nature themes; and energy conservation with LED lights. The deadline to enter is Wednesday, November 23, 2011.
Nashville Records Another Successful Great American Cleanup!
Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup, the nation's largest community improvement program, takes place annually from March 1 through May 31, involving an estimated 3 million volunteers and attendees. The Volunteer State again lived up to its nickname in 2011 with more than 1 million Tennesseans taking part in GAC events. Here are some of the impressive statewide totals:
