Public Works to sponsor campaign yard sign round-ups every weekend until September run-offs
From now until the September 11th run-off elections, Metro’s three recycle convenience centers won’t be charging any disposal fees to candidates and residents who want to get rid of unwanted yard signs, posters and other campaign advertising materials.
Virtually all of the materials campaign signs are made of can be recycled, which Metro Public Works (MPW) prefers instead of having them end up in a landfill with other household trash. To encourage Metro candidates, their volunteers and supporters to recycle campaign advertising, Metro Beautification and Environment Commission (MBEC) is sponsoring political yard sign round-ups every Saturday and Sunday in August at Public Works’ recycle convenience centers. The events will culminate with MBEC’s annual “Sign-Off Day” on Saturday, September 22nd.
“We are proud of all the candidates and commend their interest in public service to our city. We hope they and their dedicated volunteers will remove their campaign signs and dispose of them properly by taking advantage of the many recycling opportunities that Public Works provides,” said Veronica Frazier, MBEC director.
Both the Omohundro and Anderson Lane convenience centers are open on Saturdays, and Metro’s East Convenience Center is open Saturdays and Sunday afternoons. Public Works staff at each center will allow anyone with political signs to use the centers at no charge. Plastic and paper yard signs must be separated from the metal stands; they cannot be recycled together.
“Citizens may bring plastic and paper campaign signs to any of our community drop-off sites any time, and this is another wonderful way for everyone to do their part in preventing these signs from becoming unsightly roadside litter,” added Frazier.
Corrugated plastic and paper yard signs only can go in Curby recycling carts or the large plastics and paper recycle bins at all 10 Metro community drop-off sites. Metal and wooden signs should be taken to any of Metro’s three convenience centers to be recycled.
